How exactly did they stumble on to these?

EDIT: If I understand correctly, this is like referring to windows relative to another window, correct?

Sure, if you consider the implementation details of your operating system which may or may not be consistent across iterations of the OS useful.

You work with Windows enough, you figure things out. I can probably fill in a couple blanks in that structure from my own experience.

Not entirely. It appears the relationship is stored in the structure (which I find a tad out of place) but it's so much more than that.
