Returns 0, while I expect it to return 1.

Actually, you specifically told it to "Return an array of matches"

Last parameter should be 0 to "Returns 1 (matched) or 0 (no match)"

Oh man, I must have gotten confused with the modes. I used mode 1 while I wanted to use 0.

You know that using that flag that an arrary is returned? Maybe you want to use zero for a flag instead.
