What is the best way for autoit to read text that is within the body of a window? An example would be attempting to read incoming instant messages or searching a web page for a regularly updated string.

sorry- no free cookies

For the web page thing it's easy,

#include <string.au3>
#Include <IE.au3>
$oIE = _IECreate("www.google.com")
$html = _IEGetBodyHtml($oIE)
; Or
$test = _IEGetBodyTest($oIE)

$news = _StringBetween($text, "something", "something")
; Or
$news = _StringBetween($html, "something", "something")
MsgBox(0, "", $news)

For the other thing,

like msn, i'm not really sure

Many IM programs are using non-standard window controls now. Either because of skinning or anti-botting. If you want to write a bot (for IM) there are often tools available to do that. You can use the same kind of code to just read the messages.
