Is there anyway to screen capture the desktop activity into a fairly decent quality video file like: avi, wmv, mpg, swf

Capturing at 5-30 FPS, for X Min..??

How about performing a series of screen captures, use MEncoder and string them into a video?

However it was a while ago and I have learned much since so I might pick the project up at a later time.
