simple operator question

I'm missing something about <>

If NOT $a = 0 Then

;be the same as

If $a <> 0 Then

?

The first one works and the 2nd doesn't.

Im no expert but, isnt <> (greater and less than) only aplicable on numbers.?

so if $a=false then <> will fail

Read the help file under Operators, paying particular attention to ORDER OF OPERATIONS (I know your Algebra teacher beat you over the head with this in middle school).

The expression "If NOT $a = 0 Then" is equivalent to "If ( (NOT $a) = 0 ) Then", because the FIRST operation in the order is NOT.
