I'm missing something about <>

The first one works and the 2nd doesn't.

The first one works and the 2nd doesn't.

Read the help file under Operators, paying particular attention to ORDER OF OPERATIONS (I know your Algebra teacher beat you over the head with this in middle school).

The expression "If NOT $a = 0 Then" is equivalent to "If ( (NOT $a) = 0 ) Then", because the FIRST operation in the order is NOT.
