understanding AutoIt capabilities

7 posts in this topic

Hello Support Team:

I'm trying to understand AutoIt capabilities. Is it possible to have autoIt do the following:

1. Move the mouse to the location of an input text box of a third-party GUI application.

2. Click inside this input text box to highlight it.

3. Read a line of text from a file and input this line of text into the highlighted input text box and then hit the enter key.

4. And then send a key press of z, wait 1 second and repeat this until the end of file is reached.

If so, what are the best tutorials to accomplish these tasks?

Thanks,

AreYouReady

areyouready,

Welcome to the AutoIt forum. :P

Just to clarify one thing - we are not a "Support Team" - everyone here is a volunteer who gives their time freely to help other AutoIt users. So please do not expect rapid 24/7 replies - we do go to bed sometimes. :nuke:

Now to to your questions - yes, AutoIt can do everything you listed (and in some cases make your life easier by combining steps). :x

As to learning how to get Autoit to actually do these things, reading the Help file (at least the first few sections - Using AutoIt, Tutorials and the first couple of References) will help you enormously. You should also look at the excellent tutorials that you will find here and here - you will find other tutorials in the Wiki (the link is at the top of the page). There are even video tutorials on YouTube if you prefer watching to reading.

Have a read and see how far you can get by yourself - you know where we are if you run into difficulties. :shifty:

Wow, the forum title of General Help and Support lead me to think this was a support team and thanks for the clarification and volunteer answers. I'm excited to get started with the tutorials right now!!!!

Follow Melba's recommendations and look at these functions in helpfile

ControlGetText

ControlSetText

ControlClick

ControlSend

My code looks like this (below).

Question, how can I clear the input text box before sending text to it?

And problem, when I send the text to the input text box (example, Send("please")) the word please is enter as lease, the letter p is missing.

MouseClick ( "left", 42, 93,1)

Send("please")

Send ("{ENTER}")

MouseMove (490,329)

Send( "m" )

Sleep(1000)

MouseClick ( "left", 490,329,2)

if you're using controlsettext, you don't have to clear, because it will only contain the text you set it to. if you're using Send/control send, depending on the behavior of the control, if it selects the current text when it receives focus, just send away, if not, you may want to do some combination of {END} {Shift Down} {Home} to select the current text before sending
