8 posts in this topic

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but is there a character limit on edit boxes...?

l15ard,

is there a character limit on edit boxes

Yes, Windows sets an initial limit of 32k, but you can override it with GUICtrlSetLimit. :)

l15ard,

However, the real question is "Why do you want to put more than 32k in an edit?". That is a lot of text - there might be an easier way to do things. Would you care to share your reasons? :)

I'm using an edit box to show the process info for stopping and restarting some services, each PC has between 3 and 5 entries, and I've 1400 pc's on my network, so it get full, I wrote the same info to the console when I was debugging it, and found it useful to see what was happening.

l15ard,

How about a List control? No limit on content (that I know of) and a nice UDF to help you if you need it: :)

#include <GUIConstantsEx.au3>
#include <WindowsConstants.au3>

$iTotal = 0

$hGUI = GUICreate("Test", 500, 500)

$hList = GUICtrlCreateList("", 10, 10, 400, 400, BitOr($WS_BORDER, $WS_VSCROLL))

GUISetState()

SplashTextOn("Filling List", "Please be patient")

; Fill the list - takes a bit of time, but will give you about 170k of characters
For $i = 1 To 10000
    $sLine = $i & " blahblahblah"
    $iTotal += StringLen($sLine)
    GUICtrlSetData($hList, $sLine)
Next

GUICtrlSetData($hList, "Total chars = " & $iTotal)

SplashOff()

While 1
    Switch GUIGetMsg()
        Case $GUI_EVENT_CLOSE
            Exit
    EndSwitch
WEnd

I've now changed it so that it clears the list box for each PC, that way it's never overflow, and a List box control looks so much better (I've change the preview above), thanks again for the help.

Regards
