Hi @TheSaint ✌️ ,

first of all please see this statement of mine to this topic. Second of all, I set the GitHub Organization settings regards "Two-factor authentication" to not require people to have 2FA in place.

You are right, 2FA is required for personal accounts when you want to contribute to other repositories. But you have the following methods to choose from:

github-2fa-methods.png

(1) Why.
(2) Methods.
(3) Maybe this could be a variant which is done locally on the computer?

Don't get me wrong 😇 , but if you don't mind, let me ask:
What is exactly the problem? I mean how can you live without 2FA, besides the email option (I understand) for several other platforms, services etc. on the internet? I do have MS Authenticator App, I do have "Authy" App and I also use GitHub Mobile App. Yes, it's not nice, but it's required (at least for my use cases) for security reasons. The email option will also disappear more and more in the coming months/years, as it is one of the weakest methods.

So I get your point, but I don't think this is something one can escape 🤔 .
I would love to see you at the GitHub Org but of course I respect your personal views.

Best regards
Sven

I've been using Codeberg and it hasn't asked me to setup 2FA, give it a go. It has identical core features as GitHub

Thanks, I'll check it out. And hopefully that means a download counter ... and perhaps support for images and tutorials ... though I can make up for that somewhat with my Base64 Image Converter program and create single file HTML files.

I don't recall GitHub Mobile as being an option last time I checked, which was a while ago now.

Right now I'm not sure how I feel about GitHub Mobile, as a login app, and how different that would be to an Authenticator app. But I guess I could give it a go and see ... maybe. If it requires Security keys, then I likely won't bother. My issue was not using GitHub enough, and thus often auto logged out, and so needing to find a security key again, and recall how to use it, and I could only get one Authenticator app working on this PC anyway, so it was often a pain, so I just gave up on GitHub in the end. I adhere to the KISS principle.

I had a quick look, and are not sure what you mean. But that might be because I am not up-to-speed with your whole topic, so probably missing context or something. If I had been, I'd probably have seen how Codeberg was mentioned a few times, and so wouldn't have needed to ask my question.

Totally fine, no accusation at all.

I will definitely start with GitHub.

Compared to other languages, only a few AutoIt developers are active outside the AutoIt forums. As far as I know, most of them have profiles on GitHub. Even if I were to switch to Codeberg, I would still be asking the few people to migrate with me or use a second Git repository hosting platform, which I don't consider practical. Therefore, thank you for the ideas and suggestions regarding alternatives to GitHub, but for now, I'll stick with it.

Additionally, if we decide to switch to Jon's GitHub Organization (which would be more official), we would still use GitHub because I don't think he would move his organization.

Whether we migrate together later remains to be seen. I'm open to changes, but I want to make it as convenient as possible for most people so that something actually happens within the community.

Best regards
Sven

Gawd bud, you're willing to give a proprietary app-based online authentication a try over the open and offline standard for generating TOTPs from literally any piece of metal which has silicon inside it? :P

I do not know where the confusion is stemming from for you, so I'll ask you a question, *WHERE* do you prefer to generate the login code? Would you prefer it in your offline password manager? Or would you prefer having it generate on your phone, or even as a standalone app on your PC? You can even choose multiple if you fancy.

This is what I use because it does not require a phone number at all. My phone has no SIM card. The only thing GH Mobile app does is gets you to type in a 2 digit code. It’s much quicker and easier. I would recommend it.

Just as a side note: in case the discussion about 2FA/MFA and/or GitHub vs. not GitHub will increase, I please you to do it separately via additional thread or in the private message area. I am totally fine with such discussions 👌 and I am also interested in, because they are related to the topic, but they also can take over the main purpose of the thread, which I don't want.

Thank you for your understanding, no offense intended - you know 😇 .

I what? Did you not see my 'maybe' and the attached condition?

And what language are you talking ... not English it seems to me. :P

Sorry about that. :'(

It was just meant to be a quick short comment, not worthy of its own topic ... but some folks like to stretch things out, and I'm not good at ignoring. :(
