ShellExecute problems

8 posts in this topic

I am trying to open a Help File I made for my program using ShellExecute. However it is just saying file nto found. I don't know if its the file is a Compiled HTML. The file is in the root folder as a shortcut, does this make a differnce? If there is any other way to do this .... please tell.

Func Help()
   If Not ShellExecute("Help File.chm") Then
      GUISetState(@SW_HIDE, $GUI)
$MsgBox = MsgBox(16,"File Not Found", "File could not be located!")
   EndIf
EndFunc

You might have to use

If Not ShellExecute("Help File.lnk") Then

or

If Not ShellExecute("Help File.chm.lnk") Then

if it is just a link

Much better to have either the chm file itself in the folder or use the complete path to the chm file than to ShellExecute a link.

EDIT: If it is just a link then also take a look at FileGetShortcut() in the help file.

The link shortcut can not be executed, it must be extracted with FileGetShortcut() and then execute the path ($Ret[0])...

But i think that ShellExecute should be able to launch shortcuts <_<

I think it might work using the full filename (including the .lnk) of the shortcut but I'm not positive. FileGetShortcut will do the trick though. The best method is still to use the full path/filename to the chm file in ShellExecute()

In this particular case yes, but i talking about generaly, you can not run a shortcut using ShellExecute... to bad :)

But you can always use Run().. and @ComSpec <_<

$ShortcutPath = @DesktopDir & "\Downloads.lnk"
Run(@ComSpec & ' /c "' & $ShortcutPath & '"', @DesktopDir, @SW_HIDE)

That's strange.. I could have sworn I'd used it to run shortcuts before.. Hmph, guess not. I agree though, I think it should. I would think that anything that @ComSpec can run, ShellExecute should run.

I thought the same thing when I read this... and just new it couldn't be true (Until I tried it myself that is!)

I thought it would but I tried every which way and no go.

Here is the code that works though. First you have to create a shortcut to the AutoIt3.chm on the desktop and name it "AutoIt Help" or change the code to the right shortcut.

$rLink = FileGetShortcut ( @DesktopDir & "\AutoIt Help.lnk")
ShellExecute($rLink[0])
