testing for internet connection

So I'm sure this has come up, however my searches are coming up empty (probably too little coffee this morning). I need to test if there is a connection to the internet. I can't seem to figure out what would be the best way to do that. To make things more difficult I'd like to know which network adapter the connection is on If anybody had input or links to previous posts I'd appreciate it.
