Most programs that support API functions also have documentation on what commands are available to use with it.

I would start there and see what control they allow you.

Yes with the windows api you can control and automate other programs but higher level languagez like autoit make life easier. However if you want some starting points install windows sdk. Read in examples section on iuiautomation thread and references that are mentioned there. Google on sendinput keybd event sendmessage postmessage and you will find a lot of reading material.
