Directly editing text strings from compiled binary

Recommended Posts

In your case you should separate the logic of your script (which goes intot he compiled exe) and the data you need for operation. Put everything into an ini file or a database and get all the necessary data on startup.

The modifier script could then just modify the ini file or database.

Abraluna,

I would also point out that as the "script" part of your compiled Autoit script is compressed before being added to the interpreter stub, you are very unlikely to be able to see the plain text version of your string within the .exe. water's idea is definitely the way to go - although you may want to look at Zedna's Resources UDF which would enable you to store the strings in the resource table. You can put them in there during compilation by using #AutoIt3Wrapper directives - look in the SciTE <Help - SciTE Help > menu for more information. :)

Abraluna,

Delighted to hear it - and that I could be of help. :)

After thinking about this during my lunch break I started to wonder how this would actually be possible. I compared the binary of two compiled scripts with everything identical except one variable had a value of 1, and one had a value of 2.

Conclusion: I have no idea how to do what the OP wants. But it made me extremely curious, and it may teach me something. I made a script to compare the binary of the two compiled scripts, and display sections it finds with different strings. There's many different sections that are changed. (about 3-4) I'm not sure how to proceed from here, but after I write this I'll probably start editing each part with modified binary to see what the result yields.

If anyone is more knowledgeable about this, I would be extremely interested to hear it.

Edit: If this is borderline breaking rules of de-compiling then just let me know and I won't persue it anymore. (some of my searches on the subject brought this to my attention)

Caleb: Keep experimenting. Try disabling the UPX compression and see what happens.

Also, I wonder if you can reverse the UPX process to get an "unpacked" executable before fiddling with the binary.
