elevate only when needed

is there a way to elevate a scripts privliges only for certain functions?

No.

In an older thread a user suggested to put the functions who need elevated privileges into a second script, include the #requireadmin directive there and call it from the script with "standard" privileges.

I prefer the "all-or-nothing" approach to this. Either you need it or you don't.
