I think the best you can do is just make it harder for someone to mess with the settings. Also choosing default settings that are useful to most users is a good policy. I didn't get that part about Google Code, but never mind, I'm sure it makes sense to people who use the service. With google code you get a free service to upload your application that also includes versioning control, the only stipulation (like sourceforge) is to include the source code. I don't pertain to be a lawyer, but I'm sure if you asked google code about the encryption key they would be (not certain) happy with this. Either with or or without encryption, it wouldn't take a knowledgeable user more than a few seconds to see what you've done and change it, and those less knowledgable either wouldn't be able to figure it out, or care in the least how to do it. So, don't even worry about the settings, unless there's something in there that you don't want released to the public, such as an email address or your home phone number, being open sourced means that anything written in there is fair game even if you hash it. If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.Give a programmer the correct code and he can do his work for a day.
