Giving Credit as Due

 Share

Recommended Posts

There is a LOT of wonderful information on this forum. To go further, there are plenty of UDF's that have been more then helpful in my new role at work. I cannot thank the community here enough for being so willing to assist.

Okay, here is my question. What is the proper method (best practice) for giving credit? Should I include the full AU3 file? Can I take the portion I need? Is there a particular format to the comment line for credit or is a 1-liner okay stating forum name and file name?

There have been many occasions where I will throw in a comment line before public works with the name and file of where it was obtained. I want to give credit where it is due, but also want to keep size down.

Idea's?

Use Obfuscator included in the SciTE4AutoIt3, this will strip unused Functions in your Script. It's probably better to do it that way in-case you remove something which could cause the Function to break.

For me personally I have created very little in terms of original Functions and UDF's on the AutoIt Forum, but if you were to use them I would expect you to pay me :) I wouldn't mind at all, credit or no credit. This is the reason I post on the Forums, for someone to use in their projects. If I expected anything then I would probably say something or would Obfuscate the code. On that note, if a user states that don't edit the original Function and provides "Terms and Conditions" then it would be best to adhere to these.

Wruck,

There are a few people here who do set specific requirements if you want to use their code (Ascend4nt is one I can recall) but most do not.

If you take more than a few lines of someone's code I think it only common courtesy to mention it in the script. I tend to do something like this in the header:

; Author ........: Melba23
; Modified ......; Thanks to Ascend4nt and Yashied for x64 compatability code

; Author(s) .....: Melba23
; Remarks .......: - Modified Array.au3 functions - credit: Jos van der Zande, LazyCoder, Tylo, Ultima, SolidSnake and gcriaco
;                  - SRE patterns - credit: various forum members and Spiff59 in particular

; Author ........: Original UDF by Kip
; Modified ......; This version by Melba23 - using x64 compatible code drawn from Yashied's WinAPIEx library

Those are taken from some of my UDFs. Anything I post here is open to plunder as people wish - if they wish to credit me I am delighted (and in all likelihood embarrassed).

I feel your addition of a comment line is a good compromise - unless the author has made a specific request as I mentioned above. :)
