im trying to get a list of folders inside of a folder into a variable.

ie, i have folder1 and folder2 on my desktop. i want that to translate into $desktopfolders.

is there some sort of function that can accomplish this?

Incorrect, $filelist is an array. You will need to loop through the array to get the folder for the copy process.

#Include <File.au3>
#Include <Array.au3>

$FileList = _filelisttoarray (@desktopdir, "", 2)
For $I = 1 to $Filelist[0]
    filecopy (@mydocumentsdir & "\*", $filelist[$i] & "\")
Next

Something like that. This is untested but should work.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.
