Passing arguments to compiled script

So I'm stress testing my app... and I go throw in 40 files on top of the exe (which passes as arguments), and I receive a message box where the window title is the script path and the message shows:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

And the program terminates.

So I originally thought that one of the files I passed had permission issues... so I went and grouped em in 10s, and went through all 40 files that way with no error message (hmmm....)

So then I try 30 files... error message pops up... 20 files... no error message... (hmmm...)

I narrow it down to 27 files being the maximum it would let me use without it showing the error message.

So I've narrowed it down to 2 possibilities...

  • $CmdLineRaw has maxed out on how many characters are allowed in a string, and cut off the end of a path, thus creating the error.

  • There really is a 27 argument limit.
So I searched and found And THIS (see #15)... removed 1 file and added a msgbox to check the StringLen() of CmdLineRaw and its less than 2000 (hmmm...)

I can't pinpoint what's causing this... unless there really is a 27 argument limit which seems strange...

It doesn't even touch the first line of code. I added the msgbox to check the StringLen() on line 1 and it still pops up that message.

The $CMDline variable will allow up to 63 parameters, although I'm sure there's a character limit for the $CmdLineRaw variable.

Note : only 63 parameters can be return by $CmdLine[...], but $CmdLineRaw will always returns the entire command line.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Windows Version? AutoIt Version? 32 or 64?

To hazard a guess it's probably your system i.e. the limitation of Windows.

I just created a test file with 1 line

msgbox(0,"","TEST")

attempted to pass 28 files into it and still same error pops up.

The $CMDline variable will allow up to 63 parameters, although I'm sure there's a character limit for the $CmdLineRaw variable.

This morning I took the same group of files and put them directly under C:28 FILE TEST. I was able to do it with up to 45 files. So I was thinking it has to be $CmdLineRaw. So I counted StringLen() again and came out to 1973. I added a 46th file and the error message popped up. I renamed the file to '1.doc' and it worked with StringLen() returning 1994.

So I kept adding characters to the name of the file until the error popped up again:

2022 is the max character length that $CmdLineRaw will take.
