My take (iff I understand the problem correctly, being late to the party)

Iff = if and only if

and I used ConsoleWrite() twice.

If you force a result then the number used is no more the same than the one first defined ...

This doesn't look to me like a good practice, but it's a matter of perspective

Oh shit, I'm running a really very heavy number crunching job for days and it's eating up much resources. From time to time a keystroke gets awfully delayed and is caught by some other process, which is most certainly what occured here.

It does not take the 3RD and 4TH char, however, it does replacements relative to the altered string, apparently not what you want.

This does replacements to the original string...

Given the corucopia of solutions, the only reason that I'm posting this is because I believe that it is faster than the SRE solutions, it accounts for exceeding the length of the source string, and, just for the hell of it.
