User Defined Function

Recommended Posts

I have a stupid question, what is the difference between the "normal" GUI function or use "User Defined function"? For example: if i use GUICtrlCreateTab or _GUICtrlTab_Create (GuiTab.au3) what is the difference? The second function is better?

The first big difference are the native functions return a ControlID & the UDF's return a Handle (hWnd). Secondly, the UDF's are great but require a little more work/knowledge, for example if you want a GUI that you can re-size then GUICtrlSetResizing() and the native AutoIt functions make the process really easy to achieve, which can't be said for the UDF functions as it requires capturing the Windows Message 'WM_SIZE' e.g.

Func WM_SIZE($hWnd, $iMsg, $iwParam, $ilParam) ; Re-size Combo width when the GUI is re-sized.
    #forceref $hWnd, $iMsg, $iwParam
    Local $iHeight, $iWidth
    $iWidth = BitAND($ilParam, 0xFFFF)
    $iHeight = BitShift($ilParam, 16)
    _WinAPI_MoveWindow($__Combo, 10, $iHeight - 25, $iWidth - 45, 20, True)
    Return "GUI_RUNDEFMSG"
EndFunc   ;==>WM_SIZE

Depending on what you want to achieve will help you decide which path you wish to take (native/UDF). For example I wanted a combo box that I could add small images to e.g. a Flag, therefore this was possible by using the function _GUICtrlComboBoxEx_Create(). Another rule of thumb is try not mix native & UDF's functions together, as it can lead into all sorts of problems when debugging your code.
