Hello,

I am new to the AutoIT world. I want to automate a GUI based installation and the script should run on the remote machine. As I understand, I can automate the GUI based installation using AutoIT. But I don't have any clue on how to execute the AutoIT script on the remote machine.

More information :

  • I have a windows 2k8 machine where the installer is located (This is the installer which I will be planning to automate using AutoIT).
  • I want to run the AutoIT script on the remote windows machine (where the installer is located) and get the status of the execution.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Dinesh

Welcome to the forum

Option 1:

Compile to EXE on local machine .... download ... Just run it on Remote Windows.

Option 2:

Download Au3 Installer on Remote Windows ... install ....  just start making your script.

If it is an installation you're trying to manipulate, look for silent install switches. Most any modern product supports them, and it will allow you to run the script remotely without having to attempt to manipulate the GUI. If you can provide the name of the application you're installing, we can assist you with suggestions.

Hi,

Thanks much for your kind suggestion. I am working on a product where the installation is in Beta stage and it doesn't support the command line installation yet.

My plan is like this :

  • Automate the GUI based installation using the AutoIT.
  • Identify 3 windows machines.
  • Install the AutoIT on all the 3 machines.
  • Copy the automated script to all the 3 machines.
  • From a central machine connect to the power shell of all the 3 windows machines.
  • Trigger the autoIT script
  • Get the status of the test run (Auto IT script execution)

Thanks,

Dinesh

Wouldn't it be easier to deploy your installation script via group policies/RIS/WDS/whatever's in place, and have it run locally on your clients? Saves you the trouble of reinventing the network deployment wheels.

Thanks for sharing the thoughts. But, as I understand, RIS, WDS are mainly used for the Windows deployments. In my case, it is connecting to the existing windows machine and then, triggering the autoIT script for verifying the gui based installation.

Thanks,

Dinesh

It would help if you posted the script you want to run on the remote machines; it is a little difficult to assist when we're guessing at just what you're trying to accomplish.

If you compile your script, you can use paexec to copy it over, and execute it...no need to install autoit if you run compiled.

prereqs: paexec is allowed on remote stations.

What version of Windows are the client machines running? If it isn't possible to know, we'll at least assume that they are Vista+ since your server machine is 2008.

PSExec.exe (Sysinternals: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx)

PSExec will be your best friend here.

There are other ways too, to accomplish your task, some of which being remote task scheduler, http downloads via powershell, etc.

Example command would be:

C: >psexec.exe 10.0.0.2,10.0.0.3,10.0.0.4 -c -f -h -u "Admin-Username" -p "Optional-Password" -w "Remote-Working-Directory" "Path-To-Local-Autoit-Script.exe" "Arg1" "Arg2" "Argn..."

Thanks allot for your thoughts. These are very useful information and helps me allot.

Again thanks ton. I will try out with both the options : paexec and psexec and see which can accomplish my task much easier.

I will post my observation soon after the experiment.

Dinesh
