Thanks for this example of GDI+ processing

A minor point: I found with the first couple of examples that if the lower boundary of the crop area is below the edge of the GUI then no result is written, yet no error is generated.  I mention this because upon first use, nothing appeared to work ... and then I happened upon this condition as the cause.

The purpose was not to rewrite Faststone Image Capture but more or less emulate the crop of Faststone Image Viewer.

You may wish to have a look at MrCreatoR screen capture Utility that comes pretty close to Faststone Capture

I will check what you mean when I have a free moment​, but it shouldn't be too hard to do some basic error checking.

I updated the udf to avoid trespassing the edge of the GUI while selecting the crop area.

Fix implemented on qwert's suggestion.

Why it is not possible to mark area from right to left?

​I didn't think about left handed people, sorry.  Let me check.

Question, do you know by any chance what the best method is to obscure the non selected area of the picture?

From right to left I mean select an point, click the left mouse button to mark the area by moving your mouse to the left upper area.

It work only to the right lower area.

Regarding the obscure the non selected area. What you can do is to clone the bitmap and blur the cloned bitmap. When selection has started copy the blurred image and afterwards copy the marked area from the non blurred bitmap. Might be high CPU consuming process.

yes, I understood what you meant ;) , I am working on a fix, not that crazy to do, but need some time.

Concerning the darkening process, I though about overlaying a black png image and alpha blend it, need four squares to darken the surrounding area, I think this is less CPU consuming.

However, I tried to do this yesterday evening, did not succeed, I am not able to make the image visible.  Stopped my search after 3 hours of frustration, sometimes it just not the right moment...

  • Mark crop area in any direction
  • resizing Corner grabbers (use with Ctrl Left Mouse button)
  • Mouse cursor changes over move and resizing area
  • Redraw when left mouse clicking outside of crop area (restart crop), Right Mouse click, same result.

I finally realized the last missing feature, I found a way to obscure the non-crop area by using _GDIPlus_BitmapApplyEffectEx()

If you look at the code, you will find the picture tampering hereunder

#=====#monochromize unselected area=====================

and the reset hereunder

#=== reset image (remove monochrome) ===================

You may wonder why I repeat the 'monochromize' 2 times and 'reset' 3 times. I did not want to use global variables in the udf. I prefer to have the script a bit longer and avoid the use of globals. Of course if you disapprove, you can always create two functions and declare 10 global variables.

Unless bugs are found or someone comes with an interesting idea, ver 1.0.0.5 will be the last edit on this topic.

I leave version 1.0.0.4 (no obscuration) for whom is interested.  The last version might not be comfortable to use on slower PCs.

Hi @GreenCan,

3 years later and this script is still awesome. Thanks I really like example 2!

May I ask if you can help me place some GUI components on the bottom of the crop screen? When I try, the refreshing keeps overwriting the button or labels. 

I have seen a frame UDF but that allows the user to resize the frames. I'd like to have your crop image on the top 90% of the screen and have the lower 10% of the screen an area to add some labels and buttons.

      I'm working on a project in which I have to use Image recognition technique. 
      Due to client restrictions, I couldn't use AutoIt for this project. 
      Is there a way to use this DLL "ImageSearchDLL.dll" (which is used to do image recognition steps in AutoIt) in VB.Net to achieve the same result? 
      I have used this DLL few years before and got good results. If there is a latest version of this DLL and if you can share it, that will be helpful too.
      Any guidance is deeply appreciated.

      I've made some changes and fixes to this function:
      I added the possibility to vary both the thickness of the selector and its color.
      to customize the appearance and behavior of the tool, you can change the values of some variables in the function listing. See comments on lines 140-170
      You can also vary the look of the border by setting a custom dash/space length pattern. Thanks to @UEZ for that. See here for reference.
      Hope it is free of bugs.
      (i don't know how to test it to see if it is also DPI aware??)
      Suggestions for improvements and bug reports are welcome.
      How to use this demo of use:
      hit Ctrl+PrintScreen to activate the tool LeftClick and drag on the borders of the tool to resize the area you can also Leftclick and drag within the area to move it around RightClick within the area to shot a screenshot of only the delimited area to the clipboard.
      in short "how to use the function" outside this demo in your programs:
      including the following 4 standard udf
      #include <Windowsconstants.au3>
      #include <WinAPISys.au3>
      #include <Misc.au3>
      #include <GDIPlus.au3>
      and pasting the _Crop function in your listing is all what you need, then: call the _Crop() function; the 'selector' appears around the mouse

      A function that allows you to freely and visually select an area of the screen
      Yes I know, there are already some in the forum, however here is yet another cropping tool.
      I collected some snippets from the forum and merged in a simple and quick cropping tool implemented as a single standalone function.
      The _Crop() function simply returns a 4-element 1D array with the x-y coordinates of the upper left and the width and height of the selected area, respectively in the elements [0] [1] [2] [3]. So it's up to you to make good use of these parameters
      An example of use:
      Since Windows already has both a screenprint functionkey to copy the whole screen to the clipboard and the Alt-printscreen shortkut to copy only the active window to the clipboard, I'm goinmg to bind this _crop() function combined with the Control-printscreen hotkey to create a "partial" screenshot of the delimited area of the screen. The captured screenshot of that area is copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it wherever you want.
      How to use it:
      after running the script, use the Control+Printscreen keys to activate the crop tool that appears around the mouse position; then use the mouse to visually resize and move the area and when you have delimited the desired area click with the right mouse button inside the area to copy it to the clipboard.
      Suggestions, improvements and finally error reports are welcome

      Just press the lmb and move your mouse. When lmb is released you can adjust the size of the window by dragging the white rectangle to any direction. Rmb will move the marked area.
      Press ESC to get the coordinates of the marked region.

      When users get the email they don't see the images. How should I fix my code?

      Hello everyone,
      Im developing an script to check the size of all .jpg stored in windows folder.
      The problem is that it doesn´t work properly with rotated images. 
      With _GDIPlus_ImageGetWidth() and _GDIPlus_ImageGetHeight()  I get the Width and Height of images as if they had not been rotated, and I need to know how they are rotated (orientation and grades).
      Any help is welcome! If more info is needed, please tell. 😁
