Zohar
Hi I have a String that can be a Multiline string. The string can contain all possible chars, and also white spaces like: - Regular Space - Tab - [Enter]s I need to replace all the chars to '▪', and leave the spaces as they are.. What is a simple way to do it via Regular Expressions? Thank you Edited August 20, 2021 by Zohar
mLipok
maybe like this: Local $sString = 'abcd =' & @TAB & '=' & @CR & '=' & @LF & '=' & @CRLF & '=?!' MsgBox(0, '', StringRegExpReplace($sString,'\S','-')) MsgBox(0, '', StringRegExpReplace($sString,'[^ ^\n]','-')) EDIT: script correction Edited March 7, 2015 by mLipok Signature beginning:* Please remember: "AutoIt"..... * Wondering who uses AutoIt and what it can be used for ? * Forum Rules ** ADO.au3 UDF * POP3.au3 UDF * XML.au3 UDF * IE on Windows 11 * How to ask ChatGPT for AutoIt Code * for other useful stuff click the following button: Spoiler Any of my own code posted anywhere on the forum is available for use by others without any restriction of any kind. Zohar
It seems that I was able to do it with: StringRegExpReplace($S,"[^\s]","▪") According to Regular Expressions documentation, s represents all kinds of white spaces.. This page seems to be a very useful "cheat sheet": https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/az24scfc(v=vs.110).aspx According to that MSDN page, it can even be done in a shorter way than "[^s]" the shorter way is: "S" The reason: "s" matches all white space chars. "S" matches all chars except white spaces... Slowly slowly I begin to be less deterred by Regular Expressions.. Thank you all Edited March 7, 2015 by Zohar

Zohar
yes.. "s" matches all white-space characters, so we need to negate it with "[^ character_group ]", so it's "[^s]". "S" matches all chars except white-spaces, so we don't need to negate it with "[^ character_group ]", so the result is simply "S" "S" is the negative of "s" It's all explained so clearly in the tables in the page I gave earlier: Regular Expressions - Quick Reference https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/az24scfc(v=vs.110).aspx Edited March 7, 2015 by Zohar
jchd
MSDN is a useful documentation source but in this case it may be a little misleading: this page refer to .Net flavor while AutoIt uses PCRE. Zohar
Hi jhcd Thank you for pointing it out, I was not aware that Regular Expressions have falvors Is there a difference between the .NET flavor and the PCRE one, when doing simple Regular Expressions? Do you have some small example maybe?
jchd
Most elements of "simple" regexp are essentially portable accross engines but there are enough details or large differences between engines to be aware of. You can compare PCRE and .NET by comparing descriptions of individual elements. This wonderful site allows debugging and testing regular expressions (many flavors available). Zohar
I get it. OK I will be aware of it, and verify with the appropriate help file, for every programming language that I use. Thank you for noting it. Edited March 7, 2015 by Zohar
