find the next unused filenumber

Hi,

i want to create some files, and everytime i create one i want to use the next unused file number like this

myfile-0.txt

myfile-1.txt

myfile-2.txt

myfile-3.txt

so the next filenumber would be 4

my approach would be to test if the file exists

$i = 0

While 1

If Not FileExists(@ScriptDir & "\myfile-" & $i & ".txt") Then ExitLoop

$i = $i + 1

WEnd

MsgBox(0, "next free number", $i)

is there a simpler way to do this? (i can not use a counter to store the last used number, as the target files might be deleted by an external process)

As you can't store a counter I see no simpler way.
