Data to Array to DB?

Hi Everyone,

I have been using Autoit for about 6 years, but until recently I only used it to automate MSI install / uninstall. My scripts were rambling with no functions just a main script. Now I am trying to incorporate functions, array's, GUI, etc.

Part of what I am trying to do is write data to a database. I will be writing to multiple tables from multiple functions, And I am wondering if I should write my data to the database from the function that retrieves the data or to store my results in an Array, and after creating all my arrays write to the database?

I just wasn't sure which way I should do it for best results. I have tried searching for this topic, but didn't find anything. Thanks for any input.

I'd personally write the data to the DB as I go along, my logic is, that I'm still in the function which gathered the data, so code can easily go back and correct it if something goes wrong, and depending on the amount of data, process will not use as much memory if you clear it after entering it into database.

Can you please define "best results"?

What are you looking for? Speed, reliability? ...

The design of your script depends on the goals you try to achieve.

How experienced are you with databases? Normalization, transactions ...?

Thanks for the replies!

What I mean with best results is building reliable code with less chances of errors. Also having lower network usage when writing to the database. I have basic knowledge of Databases, although I have been watching some video tutorials. I have looked at the at the SQLlight.au3 file, and in fact almost all the includes. I don't have a problem writing to the database, or to an Array, I just want to know if I should create arrays to hold the data as I collect it, or write to database as I collect the data.

Using arrays to hold data is the most prevalent way to store it, e.g. using high-level calls like _SQLite_GetTable[2d]. But one important thing to know about SQLite: without extra wrapping code, it's unsafe to use over a network. The reasons are first that native SQLite isn't a client-server engine and second that all and every remote file locking protocols available are buggy whatever OS you look at.

This wonderful site allows debugging and testing regular expressions (many flavors available). An absolute must have in your bookmarks.
Another excellent RegExp tutorial. Don't forget downloading your copy of up-to-date pcretest.exe and pcregrep.exe here

PCRE v8.33 regexp documentation latest available release and currently implemented in AutoIt beta.

SQLitespeed is another feature-rich premier SQLite manager (includes import/export). Well worth a try.
SQLite Expert (freeware Personal Edition or payware Pro version) is a very useful SQLite database manager.
An excellent eBook covering almost every aspect of SQLite3: a must-read for anyone doing serious work.
